We first learned of this pepper mill from an outstanding review by America’s Test Kitchen and the timing couldn’t have been better. We were already looking to replace our outdated wooden pepper mill—you know the kind: the one with the frustrating metal knob on the top that not only releases the lid, but that’s also responsible for controlling the coarseness of the grind. Most mills are imprecise, difficult to load and they don’t hold many peppercorns.

Customers and experts alike have given this Pepper Grinder by Cole & Mason great reviews. The Derwent line of grinders features salt and pepper mills in a variety of finishes that include copper, gunmetal, forest wood and rose gold. We chose the sleek and stylish stainless steel version not only for its elegant and modern look, but its neutral design is one that feels at home in any kitchen.

One of the most notable features of the Derwent Pepper Mill is its grinding mechanism. The mill uses a diamond-cut ceramic mechanism that is designed to produce precise and even grinds. This means that you can adjust the grind to any one of six settings to reach your desired coarseness level, and the mill will deliver consistent results every time.

Another great feature of this mill is its easy-to-use design. The mill has a smooth, ergonomic grip that makes it comfortable to hold and use, and the top-loading design makes it simple to refill with fresh peppercorns. We keep ours it filled to the brim with these Whole Black Tellicherry Peppercorns from Spice Lab. There are no fussy knobs to unscrew and pieces to lose—just a top cap that slips off for easy access. A clearly marked ring at the base of the mill lets you choose grinds from fine to coarse in six different sizes. Grip the body of the mill and twist the cap to grind lots of pepper with each turn. Instead of crushing the peppercorns, the mill strips them down by layers, releasing the maximum amount of flavor in the process.

Overall, the Derwent Pepper Mill by Cole & Mason is a high-quality kitchen tool that delivers precise and consistent results. Its durable construction, elegant design, and ease of use make it a great addition to any kitchen. This is a tool we use every day in our home kitchen and it has stood the test of time. It is a bit pricey compared to other pepper mills on the market, so it may not be the best option for those on a tight budget, but it’s a premium culinary tool that will last you for many years.
